Harish Boodhoo and the Sale by Levy

We may not have shared some of the political views of Harish Boodhoo, but for this one stand in favour of the victims of the Sale by Levy, we have to praise him.

We cannot help being moved    by the distress of those families going on a hunger strike at the Jardin de la Compagnie. Indeed, there have been genuine cases of those having been fleeced by unscrupulous blood-suckers. Loan sharking transactions have bled white some of these victims. Many of the latter have become mere mental and physical wrecks.

But for Harish Boodhoo’s bold move, the Sale by Levy issue would not have been in the limelight. His is one espousing the cause of the downtrodden. Simple in attire, said to have imbibed the philosophy of the Mahatma Gandhi, H.Boodhoo has been the stormy petrel of Mauritian politics. I remember one of his first indomitable actions was to denounce the fraudulent practices of Badry and Dabee, two Legislative Assembly members in those days, if I mistake not, one a Minister, or both.

With the Sale by Levy issue hitting the headlines on the front pages of the press, we have had, by now, a rare glimpse into some murky dealings in some quarters of the legal profession, which before we did not have. We have had an insight into these quarters becoming hotbeds where fraudulent schemes thrive like jungle shrubbery. Extortion, intimidation, racketeering and so on have been current there. What is saddening is to find the duplicity of some who are supposed to be the protectors of the public!

The firebrand he has proved upholding the rights and cause of the Sale by Levy victims has made of Harish Boodhoo one who

aims at a more humane and just society. In this sordid saga of the Levy matter, we would be anything but pleased if it continues to fester.
